Sometimes After you have plunged into someone's emotions you get filled with their sadness, anger, and hate. For me After something like that, I start to write poems like crazy. For others it may be different, or maybe it's just the same.

Is empathy controllable, like being able to decide who's emotions you'd like to feel?

Strong emotions tend to up some people's creative skills. Whether the emotions are your own or not, doesn't really matter. As long as you feel them. I get the same way for the most part.
As for controlling it, yes you can. With practice, you can learn to put up a form of a mental shield and block out the foreign emotions.

Empathy and Telepathy are two connected abilities, if you have one you also have the other, whether if you're then better at sensing thoughts or emotions.
Empathy is indeed controlable if one understands how energy works, very simple techniques can be used to block out emotions. such as Kirree said, a mental shield or being able to cut off mental connections. The later one being the most important.
In order to sense someone's emotions and thoughts one has to connect to them mentally, now for powerfull empaths and telepaths this happens automaticly when they are around people and they often don't notice, this can cause problems if they aren't awair of their powers as they might mistake an emotion as their own or a thought as thier own.
so to stop sensing emotions and thoughts one is to break the mental connection between oneself and the other person. This can in some cases proof dificult as the other person, unawair ofcourse, might not want to break the connection. This might be because they have a deep problem they need to talk about, so subconsciously their mind and soul tries to get this out in form of sending the message to someone else mentally.

I think I'm an empath . . . but I'm not sure. Is connecting to fictional characters the same as connecting to real people? (I connect to them too, just not as much)

no...it's not even close at all. There is a huge difference between psychic empathy and being able to tell how a person feels by the way they talk and act (in this case, how they talk and act on paper). A true empath can tell how a person feels even though they don't talk, put up a facade or do anything at all.

Fictional characters are easy to connect with. Authors tend to do their best to create characters that you can connect with or relate to.

I think thats mostly because in most fictional characters, the reader or viewer, sees at least some part of themselves in said character and either feel closer or more distant from said character
